The International Association for Great Lakes Research announces Jérôme Marty as its new executive director. Dr. Marty comes to IAGLR from his role as a project director at the Council of Canadian Academies, an organization in Ottawa, Ontario, working at the interface between science and policy. Dr. Marty has been involved with IAGLR for the past 10 years, including leadership roles managing the association’s annual research conference and serving on the IAGLR Board of Directors, most notably, as president in 2014.

Due to a low number of abstract submissions to the State of Lake Michigan Conference and the strain of hosting multiple meetings in a single year, the IAGLR Board of Directors has decided to cancel the conference, originally scheduled for October. We hope you'll join us next May in Toronto for the 66th annual Conference on Great Lakes Research.

We've extended the deadline until Friday, July 15 to submit a presentation or associated event for the State of Lake Michigan Conference, scheduled for October 24-26, 2022, in Traverse City, Michigan. Check out the list of sessions to help plan your submission. If you don't see a session that suits, feel free to submit under "General Contributions."
The Great Lakes Beach Association will be meeting too, and you may submit a presentation for their meeting by selecting the "Great Lakes Beach Association" session when you submit.
Thanks to everyone who submitted so far. It's shaping up to be a great conference on a great lake!

J. Val Klump, former dean and a professor emeritus of the School of Freshwater Sciences at UW-Milwaukee, received the IAGLR Lifetime Achievement Award—the association's highest accolade—yesterday at its annual award ceremony. Klump is best known for his pioneering work on Great Lakes biogeochemistry, with a focus on how nutrients and carbon are cycled in lakes.

You're invited to submit a presentation or associated event for the 2022 State of Lake Michigan Conference.The deadline for submissions is Thursday, June30. The conference will take place in Traverse City, Michigan, October 24-26, 2022. The event will include the Great Lakes Beach Association associated meeting. You may submit a presentation for the GLBA meeting by selecting the "Great Lakes Beach Association" session when you submit. Please review the list of sessions before submitting. We enourage you to submit your abstract to a specific session, but also welcome general contributions.

The International Association for Great Lakes Research is proud to announce the debut of the IAGLR Large Lake Champion Award, which recognizes and honors individuals whose work has made significant contributions to sharing the social, economic, and ecological understanding of large lakes of the world. IAGLR looks to pay tribute to the luminaries and rising voices for large lakes that will help shape the association for years to come and pave the way for IAGLR’s future. In the award's inaugural year, we recognize the following IAGLR Large Lake Champions: Patricia Chow-Fraser, Catherine Febria, Abraham Francis, Jim Olson, and Ali Shakoor.

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission Travel Award promotes academic excellence by providing funds to students to present graduate research results at scientific conferences. Two travel awards will be provided to M.Sc. or Ph.D. students whose research is likely to make a significant contribution to understanding Great Lakes aquatic ecology and fishery science. Full-time M.Sc. or Ph.D. students whose research is relevant to the Great Lakes and who have not previously received this award are eligible. Applicants may seek funds (up to U.S.$1,500 per award) to attend and present their research at any conference. (To maximize opportunities in 2022, both virtual and in-person participation are eligible for sponsorship.) Recipients will be notified in mid-May, 2022. The IAGLR Student Travel Award helps to defray the travel cost for IAGLR student members attending IAGLR | JASM 2022, May 14-20, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 29. In addition, students outside the United States and Canada are eligible for an IAGLR International Travel Award. The deadline is Friday, March 18.
