Tribal and First Nation conference participation encouraged

SOLO 2021 Zoom open houses

All SOLO 2021 registered attendees, session chairs and presenters are invited to attend an online training session this week, hosted by Michigan Tech. Information will be emailed on Monday, March 1. Each sessions is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on the following days:

• Tuesday: Zoom meeting procedures for sessions chairs, speakers, and discussion
• Wednesday: Zoom webinar procedures for panelists, introductory speakers, chairs; Q&A 
• Thursday : No scheduled content, but will be open to any remaining questions or people who were unable to attend previous sessions.

Seeking Student Posters for SOLO 2021

Students are encouraged to submit a poster presentation for the virtual 2021 State of Lake Ontario Conference. The poster session will be held Wednesday, March 10 at 3 p.m. Student registration rates apply and include access to the entire conference: $95 for IAGLR members, $150 for nonmembers. Share your poster (as a PDF) with conference guests who work in research, policy, management, and education. Poster presenters will interact live with individuals and small groups of guests as they visit posters in virtual breakout rooms. Deadline February 5.

The International Joint Commission will release its 2020 Triennial Assessment of Progress report on December 10, 2020.  The IJC will host a virtual news conference to further discuss its report findings with the media; however, the webinar is open to all interested participants. To register.

IAGLR 2021 and SOLO 2021 conferences go virtual

Both the 2021 Conference on Great Lakes Research and the 2021 State of Lake Ontario Conference will switch to a virtual format. IAGLR 2021 is scheduled for May 17-21, and SOLO 2021 will be held on the new dates of March 9-11. We look forward to seeing you online to share Great Lakes science!

Joyce Foundation release RFP for groundwater policy analysis

The Joyce Foundation is expanding its grantmaking to support efforts to sustainably manage groundwater supplies in our region. As a starting point for this new portfolio, the foundation seeks proposals to develop a comprehensive assessment of state and tribal groundwater policies in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. State of Strait report released: Assesses Detroit River/Western Lake Erie ecosystem health

Today, Canadian and U.S. partner organizations released the 11th biennial State of the Strait report titled “Checkup: Assessing Ecosystem Health of the Detroit River and Western Lake Erie.” This report is based on the evaluation of long-term datasets on 61 indicators of ecosystem health and discussions at the State of the Strait conference held in November 2019 at the University of Windsor, Ontario. More than 40 organizations contributed individual indicator reports and more than 200 people participated in this binational conference. See press release for more information.

World’s leading aquatic scientific societies issue urgent call to cut global greenhouse gas emissions

In an unprecedented statement released today, 110 aquatic scientific societies representing more than 80,000 scientists worldwide sound the alarm for the devastating impact of climate change on the world’s freshwater and marine ecoystems. The International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) joins this call to drastically curtail global greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst impacts of human-caused climate change on these aquatic ecosystems. Unless urgent action is taken to reduce emissions, scientists predict catastrophic impacts to human health, fisheries, and economies.
