WOTUS Action Alert: Efforts to replace Clean Water Rule continue

Lawmakers continue their efforts to repeal and replace the 2015 Clean Water Rule. So far, their efforts to define "navigable waters" haven't gained much traction, but the threat remains. IAGLR supports the protections for headwater streams and wetlands enshrined in the rule, which was supported by millions of Americans and is backed by sound science. Please consider calling your member of Congress to express your support for protecting our nation’s critical headwater streams and wetlands in order to shield communities from flooding, safeguard drinking water, and defend critical fish and wildlife habitat that supports an $887 billion outdoor recreation economy.

Video clips of large lakes wanted

We're looking for short HD video clips for a movie to be shown at the 5th European Large Lakes Symposium & IAGLR International Meeting in September. The conference will end with an outreach session featuring a movie (in English) about the conference. The movie will illustrate key aspects and issues of large lakes and summarize the main conclusions presented during ELLS-IAGLR2018. We encourage you to contribute to this movie and submit short HD video sequences of your lakes.

Call for Sessions for ELLS-IAGLR Conference

IAGLR members are invited to propose a session for the first-ever joint international conference between IAGLR and the European Large Lakes Symposium. This “Big Lakes – Small World” meeting will be held September 23-28 at Lake Geneva (Evian, France). Currently, seven sessions have been confirmed, and we are now launching a competitive call for proposals for the remaining two sessions. See the Call for Session Proposals and submit by March 16.

We are currently seeking three U.S. board members (3-year term), a U.S. student board member (2-year term), 1 member representing a nation other than Canada or the United States (3-year term), and secretary (3-year term). IAGLR to evaluate Great Lakes restoration with Erb Family Foundation support

How effective are efforts to restore the most degraded areas in the Great Lakes? A new grant from the Erb Family Foundation will support the International Association for Great Lakes Research in answering that question. IAGLR will conduct research with Canadian and U.S. experts to evaluate achievements and lessons learned from 32 years of efforts to clean up Great Lakes Areas of Concern.

MN Sea Grant’s Hagley receives ASLO award

IAGLR member Cynthia Hagley (Minnesota Sea Grant College Program) is the 2018 recipient of ASLO's Ramón Margalef Award for Excellence in Education honoring excellence in teaching and mentoring in the fields of limnology and oceanography. Hagley is recognized for her vision and success at developing career-long relationships among scientists and educators, for impacting thousands of students, and for making environmental and aquatic data understandable to non-specialists. Congratulations!

Sturgeon: Creatures of the night in the Niagara River

For the first time outside of a laboratory, Great Lakes scientists at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium proved sturgeon tend to be nocturnal creatures. The discovery will be published in the Journal of Great Lakes Research. Read the full story by The Buffalo News.
